7-point, 5-point example, and custom scales

Australian GPA Calculator

Use this Australian GPA calculator to estimate your result from subject grades and credits. Choose a common 7-point example, a clearly labelled school 5-point example, or your own unofficial scale.

Subjects and credits

Enter the grade and credit value shown on your record. UP / S can stay visible while excluded.

How to use it

Calculate an Australian university GPA

Enter each subject, select its grade, and add the credit or unit value shown on your record. The Australian GPA calculator multiplies each grade point by its included credits, adds those quality points, and divides by the total included credits. Switch to equal weighting when each subject should count once and credit values are unavailable.

Check the selected scale

The University 7 example uses HD 7, D 6, C 5, P 4, and F 0. It is a useful starting point, but it is not a national rule. Australian institutions can use different labels, values, exclusions, and rounding methods. Check the scale published for your course before treating the estimate as comparable with an official result.

See the denominator

An HD worth 6 credits and a Distinction worth 12 credits produce 114 quality points across 18 included credits. The credit-weighted result is 6.33. The formula trace shows which totals were used instead of trusting a number with a hidden denominator.

Three focused modes

Rows, quick counts, or a target GPA

The Australian GPA calculator keeps detailed subject rows, fast grade counts, and future planning in separate modes so each result stays easy to audit.

Calculate

Add optional subject names, choose grades, enter credits, and keep excluded UP / S rows visible. New rows can reuse your chosen default credit value.

Quick Counts

Enter the number of results in each grade category when subjects share a credit value. The active scale controls the categories and points.

Target GPA

Enter your current result, completed credits, target, and remaining credits. The planner distinguishes secured, reachable, exact-maximum, and unreachable cases.

Scale boundaries

Pick the scale that matches your record

The Australian GPA calculator opens with a GPA 7 point scale. The separate A-E school example uses A 5, B 4, C 3, D 2, and E 1, but it is not presented as an Australian high school standard. If neither matches, clone the active preset, edit two to ten labels and point values, and keep the Custom / unofficial status visible.

Ungraded passes, fails, and policy checks

Choose Ungraded Pass / S (excluded) when your policy leaves that study out of GPA. The row remains in the audit while its credits are excluded from numerator and denominator. A fail remains included at the active scale value unless your institution says otherwise.

Rules the arithmetic cannot decide

Check how your institution handles repeated subjects, pass/fail study, withdrawals, advanced standing, supplementary results, ungraded passes, and rounding. Those choices can change an official calculation even when the arithmetic shown here is correct.

Separate measures

GPA and WAM are different results

GPA averages grade-point values. WAM averages percentage marks using subject credits. They are not interchangeable. Turn on optional WAM marks only when you have percentage results; the separate WAM calculation reports entered-mark coverage and never changes the selected GPA scale or target plan.

Example result

A transparent 6.33 GPA estimate

An HD at 6 credits and a Distinction at 12 credits give 114 quality points across 18 included credits.

Australian GPA example result of 6.33 from 114 quality points across 18 included credits.
The selected University 7 example shows both the result and the credit-weighted formula.

Recheck a scenario

Save, share, and verify your inputs

The Australian GPA calculator runs in your browser. Save and Restore use that browser. Copy summary creates readable text with the selected scale, result, totals, and formula; Copy share link creates a different artifact, a bounded URL that restores calculator state. A shared link preserves inputs but cannot confirm that the scale matches an official handbook.

Estimate limits

What this estimate can and cannot tell you

This Australian GPA calculator can compare credit and equal weighting, show excluded rows, calculate quick counts, and test a future target. It cannot certify a transcript, guarantee eligibility, or determine admission, scholarship, honours, employment, or program outcomes. It does not upload transcripts, parse files, use OCR, call an AI service, or store cloud account history.

FAQ

Australian GPA questions

Is there one official Australian GPA scale?

No. A 7-point scale is common at many universities, but point mappings and academic rules vary. Match the selected example or a custom mapping to the rules published for your course.

How does the Australian GPA calculator handle credit points?

It derives the denominator from valid included rows. Each grade point is multiplied by its credits, the products are added, and the total is divided by included credits. Equal weighting gives each included subject a weight of one.

What is a good GPA in university Australia?

There is no single number with the same meaning everywhere. Read a result against its scale, institution, course, and purpose, then compare it with published requirements or grade descriptors.

Can I use this as an Australian GPA calculator for high school?

Only when the A-E 5-point example matches the record you are checking, or when you enter the correct custom mapping. Australian school systems do not use one national GPA scale.

Does an ungraded pass count toward GPA?

Policies differ. Detailed mode includes an Ungraded Pass / S (excluded) choice that removes the row from both quality points and included credits while keeping it visible in the audit.

Why is my WAM different from my GPA?

WAM uses percentage marks while GPA uses grade-point values. The optional WAM fields calculate a separate credit-weighted result and never convert one measure into the other.
